You may end up with a faulty catalytic converter in the exhaust system after about 10 years. This can equate to 100,000 miles on the odometer. The catalytic converter treats your vehicle’s exhaust to remove dangerous emissions before it is released into the environment. If the converter has gone bad, you will have one or more of the following problems.
CEL Dashboard Warning
When we say CEL, we mean check engine light. A faulty catalytic converter will trigger the main computer chip to turn on the check engine light on the dashboard. Unfortunately, this light will not turn off until you have the converter replaced with a new one.
Underperforming Engine
Your engine is also going to underperform. This is a sign that the converter is clogged and the exhaust is backing up into the combustion chamber. When the chamber is filled with exhaust, it cannot produce combustion efficiently. Consequently, your engine will lag.
Underperforming Fuel Economy
In addition to a lagging engine, you will also experience lagging fuel economy. If you cannot afford to fill your tank more often than you normally do, it will become important to have the converter replaced right away to save you money on gasoline or diesel fuel.
Dark Engine Exhaust Smoke
Unfortunately, if the converter is not working properly, you will end up with high emissions in your vehicle’s exhaust that can turn the exhaust black. In addition, excess fuel in the combustion chamber can also turn the exhaust black. The main computer chip may add unnecessary fuel to the combustion chamber in an effort to resolve the lagging engine.
The Smell of Rotten Eggs
One of the deposits that clogs the catalytic converter and causes it to malfunction is sulfur. When it builds up inside the converter, it releases a rancid odor. The odor smells like rancid eggs. Your exhaust will be filled with this odor and you may smell it underneath your automobile.
Excessive Undercarriage Heat
In addition to the rancid odor, you may also experience excessive undercarriage heat. This is a sign that the converter is overheating. Unfortunately, this heat may rise into the engine and cause your engine to overheat. Do not drive your vehicle if the engine is too hot.
